Mockumentary. The Rutles! And thank you for the movie suggestions.

Ah, "The Rutles". Absolutely brilliant! Another written/directed/starring masterpiece, and the songs are inspired. Good call!

You forgot your favorite Christmas movie.

Radio Far Side's avatar

Well that's a glaring oversight. Off the top of my head, I would have to list "A Christmas Carol" (1951) with Alistair Sim. That is likely the very best version ever, and Sim is the gold standard of Scrooge roles. I have several others, but I'll save them for next year's list.

Nice catch! Timely as well.😁👍👍

Excellent choices, mate. Even a couple I've never seen, nit they're now on my Playlist. Good on ya!

Radio Far Side's avatar

I'm glad I could dig up at least a couple you haven't seen. Let me know if you like the suggestions.

If I had to pick my five favorite movies, they would probably be...

1. A Clockwork Orange

Kubrick at his finest.

2. Dr. Strangelove, Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb

Ditto.

3. The Good, The Bad And The Ugly

People tend to see this as an Eastwood film but it's really all about Tuco, or so it seems to me.

4. Some Like It Hot

Best Comedy ever in my opinion.

5. The Birds

Love the way this film starts off as a Screwball Comedy (aka Rom Com) until birds start pecking out eyeballs.

Also...

Best Psycho Drama - Whatever Happened To Baby Jane

Best Suspense - Double Indemnity

Best Fantasy - The Adventures Of Baron Munchausen

Best Historical Drama - Seabiscuit

Best Action and Best Christmas movie - Die Hard

Best Satire - Brazil

(Yes, Terry Gilliam is one of my favorites too.)

You have outstanding taste. "Double Indemnity" and "Some Like It Hot" are personal favorites, and I'd watch Gilliam's home movies a hundred times. I avoided Kubrick and Wells here, because they are always on lists like this, so I tried to think of lesser-known or forgotten films. I consider the entire filmographies of both to be outstanding art. That goes for Hitchcock, as well. I haven't seen "baby Jane" in ages. Thanks for bringing that one up!

Several on here I've never viewed are now on various playlists. Thanks!

Enjoy! All of them are excellent in their own ways. I hope you find a new favorite among them.

Very cool! Wife and I have about 1200 titles with a list of many more to add. Was unfamiliar with some of those listed so plan to check them out. Thanks!

A respectably library indeed! I'm happy to know I may have introduced you to new favorites. Enjoy the holiday viewing and we'll make another list for next year. :)

Great choices! Agree on all. I can still watch "Best in Show" and get many belly laughs. So much great writing and directing. Some of these I hadn't seen in years. I'll have to catch up over the holidays.

Thanks for sharing.

"Best in Show" heals with laughter. It's so real and respects the characters for who they are (two left feet). I have to check the dates, but the two commentators may have been the models for "Dodgeball". All of Guest's film are hysterical--"Waiting for Guffman" comes to mind--but this one is inspired. Enjoy! A little something for everyonne.

The commentators were hilarious! The stodgy Brit and the tacky American. I do think you're right about they're being the prototypes for "Dodgeball". I'll add "Guffman" to my holiday mix.

I just may have to go and rent it, now that we are all reminiscing about it!

😁👍👍

You won't be disappointed. :)

I'd completely forgotten about this movie...what a hoot it was and a real surprise for me.

I still chuckle just thinking about it.

Nice list...some I haven't either heard of or seen...

btw..the link to "Murder on the Orient Express" points to "The Driver". You may want to fix that. It's one of my faves.

Lynnie's avatar

oops...I meant to say "Time Bandits". 🤪

Radio Far Side's avatar

Good catch on the link. I've fixed it now, and yes MOTOE is a fantastic film. You have great taste! As for "Best in Show," Guest did a number of mockumentaries, including "Waiting for Guffman" and "A Mighty Wind," not to mention starring in "This is Spinal Tap" and "The Princess Bride" (another favorite romcom). I understand "Spinal Tap II: The End Continues" is out or coming out. Haven't seen it yet, but I'll get Guest is wonderful, as usual.

Great list of your own, Scipio. "Big Jake" and "The Wild Bunch" are classics, and I've always been a secret fan of spaghetti Westerns, especially with Jack Palance and Lee Van Cleef. One I would add to your list is "The Cowboys" (1972) with John Wayne and Roscoe Lee Brown. The latter was a childhood favorite. Thanks for expanding our list!
