I am a western woman who has always honoured the "porcelain" she was born with and recognized early on that one's skin "eats" that which is applied to it. If you would not ingest it, do not wear it.
I long ago made peace with the fact that the Sun and I are mortal enemies. My parents used to dip me in zinc oxide at the beach, which makes me loath sun, sea and sand. I'll just have to look all pasty, since I refuse to rub any of those toxic waste dumps on my skin.
Yeah, chasing beauty is a carnival game only won by the barkers and hucksters. You would think in today’s world asking for less brown and more white would get you cursed by the BLM crew. Now asking for less white and more brown sounds fashionable, but would surely upset a few. Good old vanity in small portions is good for you. It will keep you trim and fit and hopefully healthy all the while saving you money.
To me, that's the ultimate irony about the white folks who've bought into self-loathing. A full 3/4s of the world want to be whiter and will pay handsomely for it, while the white folks are desperately trying to be browner. I figure I'll just use what I got and keep it maintained as best I can. Maybe in the next life I'll actually be able to spend more than 30 minutes in direct sunlight.
I've always thought farmer's tans were respectable. It meant that someone did honest work. The best I've ever achieved, though, is a red neck and the ability to do a great imitation of a snake during molting. I once went sailing in shorts and couldn't walk for a week.
Ah, but when it comes to ability to synthesize vitamin D3 from moonlight and spend hours in sub-zero temperatures and still be comfortable, I win. I've noticed that folks with darker skin get cold much faster than I do, but the trade-off is I'm very intolerant of heat, so naturally I live on the equator.
Yup, I got the "fair" skin, red hair and blue eyes of a night creature. Maybe that's why I chose the theatre as a career, so I could work i the dark. :)
I grew up on the 29th parallel, but I lived for a time on the 53rd. I never quite got used to sunrise at 10a and sunset at 3p during the winter, and the reverse in summer. So naturally I gravitated to -7, where it's 12-hour days all year long and eternal summer. There's something to be said for predictability.

I do try to get some sun exposure between 8:00 am and 9:00 am here at 48.37° N as anything later in the day at that latitude just burns.
I'm on the same schedule, but at 7° S. However, I do my best tanning during the full moon. Gives me a nice glow. :)

You have a short window up there to get all the free vitamin D you can from the sun enjoy
Well, I do have a farmer's tan. Does that count?

I'm lucky. Inherited the olive skin of my Creole ancestors and not the porcelain skin of the German, Dutch and Scots-Irish branches.

I'll stay pink, thank you very much. In an emergency I don't need a flare. I just stand in the light.
I've always thought you look pretty in pink, but at least you're in the pink of health.
I went from 45.52 lat to 19 lat...
10 years in the sun for a whitely with light skin and blue eyes.
I think I'm now paying for it.
All my Japanese friends were hiding under big-brimmed hats and the redheads left.
Well, it sure was fun while it lasted. 😂😎

I love that kind of predictability! I despise daylight "savings" time, btw.
